Our Values

Pro-abortion

We are 100% pro-abortion and pro-voice.

Legal abortion is the first step of many to ensure abortions are accesible to all.

We recognise the wide range of restrictions Muslims across the world face when accessing abortions. These restrictions can include legality, but also include experiences of marginalistion, oppression, discrimination, stigma and lack of support.

We believe abortion should be free, legal accessible, supported, empowered, embodied and cherished.

Expansive Islam

At Ad’iyah, we do not believe there is a right way to be Muslim. We welcome all those who identify as Muslim and will work hard to challenge the hierarchies that exist within contemporary Islamic practice.

We recognise that practices of Islam have been and continue to exhibit colonial behaviours. Misogyny, racism, transphobia, queerphobia, ableism, classism, caste and capitalism have no place at Ad’iyah because we believe they have no place in Islam.

Ad’iyah believes that abortion is permissable in Islam, however, abortion being permissable is not what determines whether someone deserves support.

Anti-oppression

We acknowledge that our current society is oppressive and that the oppressions created under white supremacy interlock, combine and intensify hardship. It is naive to believe that these oppressions will not enter our spaces, especially if we do not try to actively challenge them.

At Ad’iyah, we name systems of oppressions and try to account for them in all of the work we do. We will continuously interrogate the space we take up, who has access to our spaces and whose abortion stories are centred.

Reproductive Justice

Reproductive Justice is the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities. (Sistersong)

At Ad’iyah, reproductive justice underpins everything we do and is the framework by which we govern all of our decisions.

Our values are determined by the communities we serve and the beautiful folk that make up our collective. These values work best for us all right now but are subject to change as we grow and our communities’ needs change.

By and for the community

Ad’iyah’s space are for any and all Muslims who have experienced pregnancy endings. It is by and for the Muslim Ummah, which we acknowledge comes in all shapes and sizes. Our spaces cherish all Muslim identities.

Inclusivity and ‘inclusive’ spaces centre whiteness by viewing it as the default. Everything else is therefore an addition and something we have to go out of our way to ‘include.’ This is not how we want our spaces to be. Our spaces are already ready for you and will evolve and grow as our community does too.
