Keeping ourselves and each other safe.

Community guidelines:

  1. We are kind and respectful

  2. We are intentional with our words and our apologies

  3. We meet people where they are, not where we want them to be

  4. We do not tone police individual experiences of abortion and Islam

  5. We use expansive language when talking about abortion and Islam as a whole. We recognise that people of all genders have abortions. We recognise that Muslims of all descriptions have abortions.

Safety Statement
Ad’iyah aims to centre and uplift the voices of those commonly erased from both abortion spaces and contemporary practices of Islam. This includes but is not limited to folk who are: Black, Indigenous, Global Majority, from underrepresented practices of Islam, women, Trans, Non-binary, gender non-conforming, working class, and disabled.

Ad’iyah acknowledges that harm can and is caused in many different ways and that within oppressive structures, it is impossible to guarantee 100% safe spaces. Our spaces are therefore committed to being as safe as possible. We will take the necessary measures to ensure this safety.  We follow our community guidelines and ask our participants to do the same when sharing our spaces. Any hateful or violent language will not be tolerated. This includes but is not limited to: racism, sexism, misogyny, LGBT+phobia, ableism, classism.

Anonymity
Ad’iyah recognises the need for anonymity in spaces like ours. We believe abortion stories should be shared if and when it feels right a person. Accessing our spaces will involve sharing a chosen name and email address that will be used to cross reference the people attempting to join our calls. No further information is needed. Community spaces will never be recorded or photographed, and community members are under no obligation to turn their cameras on if it does not feel safe or good. Confidentiality in our spaces relies on community members following our guidelines. We ask that the names, locations and stories shared in our circles stay within the group. If there is cause for concern, please share this with facilitator and ask for help as you need it.

Accountability

We believe that serving our community requires continuous reflection and evaluation, to ensure that our services are actually meeting the needs of the community. We will always welcome your feedback and suggestions. Ad’iyah is conscious of how easy it is to prioritise single narratives of Islam and abortion experiences. To hold ourselves to account, we have a working group of community members that support, critique and inform the decisions that we make.

“Ad’iyah is by and for Muslim communities.

Our love of Allah (swt) and the Ummah motivates everything we do.”
